It's Never Too Late
What does a 78-year old grandmother have to teach us about the value of resistance training? Meet Shirley Webb, a recent internet celebrity after her trainer posted a YouTube video of her deadlifting 225 pounds with impeccable form.
Even more inspiring than the ease with which she reps a weight with perfect spine stability is her full ESPN interview. In it, the interviewer asks her to describe the changes she's experienced since she first started going to the gym two years ago to help her granddaughter get ready for her upcoming wedding.
Mrs. Webb described being unable to climb stairs without pulling herself up with her arms, and not being able to get up from the floor without assistance. Now, she reflects, those just aren't problems for her any more.
The good news is that safely building a reservoir of strength is possible at any age, and pays dividends for the rest of your life.
The great news is that you don't have to wait until you're 76 years old to get started.
